Academic Advisors are a critical part of the college experience, student success, and retention. Academic advising is a personalized, interactive, and intentional process in which the advisor helps to empower students to set and achieve academic, career, and personal goals. Chicago State University adopts the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) core values to provide guidance for academic advisors. In order for the advisement process to be successful, advisors and students must create a working relationship. Advising is a shared responsibility between advisor and advisee. Both parties must strive to collaborate and build partnerships by communicating regularly through in-person appointments, mail, telephone, and E-mail.

Advisor’s Responsibilities:

.

  • Serve as a student advocate and provide guidance to students as they set academic, career, and personal goals.
  • Must be aware of current university resources and provide students with the necessary referrals.
  • Be available to students.
  • Be a responsive listener.
  • Understand and communicate curriculum, graduation requirements, and university policies and procedures.
  • Assist students in understanding degree requirements.
  • Assist students in selecting courses based on individual interest and abilities.
  • Monitor progress toward career and educational goals.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records.
  • Participate in advisor’s training and developmental opportunities to keep informed and current.

Student’s Responsibilities:

  • Review and understand university policies and procedures.
  • Generate CAPP report to understand what classes are needed to fulifll major requirements.
  • Read the student handbook and ask for clarity for issues that you may not fully understand.
  • Learn to access and navigate through university technology.
  • Explore resources to assist in making career and academic decisions.
  • Schedule and attend advising appointment at least once per semester.
  • Prepare for advising sessions and bring relevant materials to appointment.
  • Bring a list of questions to appointments and ask questions if a topic is not understood.
  • Be familiar with requirements of selected major (s)/minor(s) and schedule courses in accordance with those requirements.

Transfer Advising

While enrolled at CSU you and your advisor will work together to develop your academic plan. To ensure that your personal and academic needs are met, you will want to explore with an advisor your values, goals, and career objectives. If you are coming to Chicago State University after earning credits at another institution, then you are strongly encouraged to contact the Office of Evaluation and Advisement, which will help you learn more about your transfer credit (s).

Locating your Academic Advisor

All freshmen students (students with twenty-nine (29) or less credit hours) are advised through the First Year Experience Office. The FYE office phone number is 773-995.4510.

All students with thirty (30) or more credit hours are advised through the student's college which is based on the student's major.

To locate your advisor, please follow the steps below.

  • .Locate the directory that applies to you: Your major college.

    Ex. Major: Computer Science which is in the College is Arts & Sciences.

  • Click on the link to open the directory.

  • Look under program for your major: Your academic advisor's name is on the same line as your major.
