Rep. Marlow H. Colvin

Marlow H. Colvin was born Chicago, Illinois in March 1964. He earned his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from Chicago State University. During his undergraduate work at Chicago State, Colvin received numerous awards including the Al Raby and Nancy Jefferson Memorial Awards from the History and Political Science Department. He was also inducted in the National Political Science Honor Society and was awarded a fellowship to the Ralph J. Bunche Summer Institute at the University of Virginia. Colvin replaced former Representative Todd Stroger in the Illinois House when Stroger was elected to the City Council, representing the Eight Ward. While a member of the House, Colvin has championed equal opportunity for minority contractors on state projects.

His many accomplishments include:

  • Sponsored legislation on e-text books
  • Sponsored legislation that prohibits debt settlement companies from charging upfront fees
  • Supported legislation that extended the General Homestead Exemptions and created the Taxpayer Action Board for Cook County
  • Supported the Illinois Hospital Report Act in which hospitals are required to report nurse staffing, infection prevention measures, and hospital inquired infections data to the Illinois Department of Public Health
  • Supported the Small Business Job Creation Tax Credit Act
  • Sponsored legislation acknowledging 95th and Stony Island as a Black Wall Street
  • Sponsored legislation to request that the Chicago Public Schools allocate 2,100 seats to Youth Connection Charter School over a seven-year period to address the immediate and urgent need to help as many young adults as possible achieve an education
  • Sponsored legislation to create the Tobacco Sales at Health Care Institutions Prohibition Act
