CSU Welcomes New Students

CSU Welcomes New StudentsOn August 16th-18th, The Department of Students Affairs and Office of First Year Experience hosted the 2nd Annual Freshman Leadership Institute (F.L.I.) and New Student Convocation.  F.L.I. is Chicago State University’s three-day freshman retreat designed to help freshmen transition into Chicago State University, teach them CSU traditions, and introduce them to the Chicago State experience.  Nearly 120 new freshmen participated in F.L.I. this year.

During the three days of F.L.I, students resided in the Residence Hall, participated in workshops facilitated by CSU’s faculty and staff, and learned more about their campus by being partnered with current student leaders.  The three days culminated with a city of Chicago scavenger hunt where students explored the city while learning about different historical landmarks.

CSU Welcomes New StudentsThe theme of this year’s New Student Convocation was "New Chapter...New Beginning."  Grammy award winning artist J. Ivy delivered an inspirational message to the class of 2021 as the convocation speaker.  Convocation provides students with an opportunity to gather with their classmates and join the CSU academic community.  It is one of the few times that the class will gather together prior to graduation.  This annual tradition is when all new students are officially inducted into their graduating class, and their academic careers officially begin at Chicago State University. Students also took their class pledge, participated in the pinning ceremony, and took their class picture in front of the boxcar.

“F.L.I. was amazing, and we look forward to all that the class of 2021 will contribute to Chicago State University,” said Matoya Marsh, Director of First Year Experience.
