CSU Teams With Little Black Pearl

On November 13, 2015 CSU Provost Angela Henderson along with the Director of Outreach, Michelle d’ Arville - Downing welcomed 22 teachers from Little Black Pearl for a professional development session focusing on common core standards. The event, held in the Sunroom of the New Academic Library, was the first of its kind.

“The primary goal for this workshop was to share knowledge between our team and local high school teachers on the best strategies for bridging the gap between high-school and college,” Downing said. “Inviting groups like Little Black Pearl to exchange ideas while introducing them to the CSU campus will help create the type of valuable partnerships that will make both organizations stronger.”

Little Black Pearl is a nonprofit organization in the Kenwood/Oakland community. It serves young people and adults from the Chicago area and offers opportunities for culture and entrepreneurship. Recently, Chicago State University started a partnership with Little Black Pearl to work together in everything from career development to community projects.

“Community is one of the core values of the university. We take pride in not only our campus community but neighboring ones as well. We were excited to have teachers from Little Black Pearl visit our campus and we look forward to having them again,” Henderson said.
