The Department of Health Information Administration (HIA) appreciates your visit to our webpage. This is an exciting time to engage your aspirations as a health information professional given the increased focus on healthcare privacy and security, healthcare data analytics and the evolving technologies in the electronic health record and coding classification systems.  The Health Information Management skillset offers the intersections between medical science, technology and business.

A career in health information offers a challenging, exciting and rewarding career choice.  Students are prepared to assume employment in a variety of traditional and non-traditional organizations. Graduates completing the program are eligible to sit for the national certification exam of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) whereupon successful completion can become a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).

RHIAs are a critical linkage between care providers, patients and payers. The RHIA has a comprehensive knowledge base of medical, administrative, ethical, and legal requirements and accreditation standards related to healthcare delivery as well as serving as the source content expertise for privacy and security of protected patient information.

The Program’s accreditor of Chicago State University is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The College’s accreditation for a Baccalaureate degree in Health Information Administration (HIA) has been reaffirmed through 2021.
