Federal TEACH Grant (Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education)

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program provides grants for undergraduate and graduate students who intend to:

• teach full time
• in high-need fields
• fulfill a four year teaching commitment (within eight years)
• at schools that serve students from low-income families (see Agreement to Serve)

Chicago State University Eligibility Requirements for TEACH Grant are:

• Must be enrolled in a High Need Field, as follows:
  • Bilingual Education and English Language Acquisition
  • Foreign Language
  • Mathematics
  • Reading Specialist
  • Science
  • Special Education
  • Other identified teacher shortage areas as of the time you begin teaching in that field. These are teacher subject shortage areas (not geographic areas) that are listed in the Department of Educations Annual Teacher Shortage Area Nationwide Listing. • Must be enrolled, at least half-time, as an undergraduate or graduate student (At-Large status students are ineligible for TEACH Grant Program)
• Must be enrolled in a degree seeking program for TEACH Grant eligibility
• Must have a current Agreement to Serve for aid year
• Must have current TEACH Counseling for aid year
• Must complete a FAFSA for aid year
• Must be a citizen or eligible non-citizen
• Must have at least a 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 scale (Certification student’s graduate GPA will serve as the primary GPA for TEACH Grant eligibility) If a Certification student has undergraduate hours only, consideration for the TEACH Grant will be based solely on the undergraduate GPA.)
• If a student has an incomplete grade ("I"), the student will not be considered for a TEACH Grant, for any subsequent semester, until the "I" has changed to a regular letter grade of A, B, C, D, F, or P.
• 2nd Bachelors, Second Masters and Doctoral candidates are not TEACH Grant eligible.
• All transfer students and students enrolled in new programs of study are not eligible for TEACH Grant until a CSU GPA is established in the new program.
• Once our office has processed your request for a TEACH Grant it will be "Offered" to you as part of your financial aid award package. It will be necessary for you to "Accept" the TEACH Grant via CSU X-press before any funds can be disbursed.
• All TEACH Grant participants must complete Exit Counseling at studentaid.gov after a total withdrawal from semester coursework, from the university or upon graduation.
• TEACH Grants will not be available for the Summer semester.

 Full time status students are awarded as such:  $ 2,000.00 –  per semester 

Full time status for TEACH Grant awards is defined as:

• Undergraduates - 12 hours
• Certification students - 12 hours
• Master’s - 9 hours

Part time status students are awarded as such:  $ 1,000.00 –  per semester 

Part time status for TEACH Grant awards is defined as:

• Undergraduates and Certification students enrolled with less than 12 credit hours and a minimum of 6 credit hours
• Master candidates enrolled with less than 9 credit hours and a minimum of 6 credit hours

 Due to "The Sequester":

• the actual amounts awarded to you for TEACH may be less than the amounts stated above
• awards already processed for you may need to be reduced
