CSU Library and Information Science Program Receives Initial Accreditation

Graduate program primed to enhance the careers of educators, librarians and archivist 

CHICAGO, IL. – Chicago State University’s Library and Information Science program received initial accreditation by the American Library Association (ALA), the largest and oldest library association in the world. Chicago State is now one of the only two ALA accredited programs in the county who serve a primarily African- American student body.

 ALA initial accreditation demonstrates Chicago State University’s commitment to academic excellence by meeting professional standards in systemic planning, curriculum, faculty, students, administration, finances and resources.

 The University’s graduate library science program has a rich history that began in 1947 when CSU was known as Chicago Teacher’s College, a training school for teachers located in Blue Island, IL.  Today the program is fully offered online.  

 Librarians must possess a Masters degree from an ALA accredited program.  However, there are many other career options for people interested in the Library and Information Science program such as an Archivist, Curator, Researcher, Records Manager, or Data Analyst.  

 The Master of Science in Library and Information Science program at Chicago State University is accredited by the American Library Association Committee on Accreditation, with the status of Initial accreditation. The next comprehensive review visit is scheduled for Spring 2026.
