CSU Physics Professor Received Lifetime Achievement Award From The Chicago Council On Science & Technology

The 2021 Science in the City Award is given to scientists from Chicago who have made a meaningful impact on the community.

Dr. GarciaChicago, IL: Dr. Edmundo Garcia-Solis, Professor of Physics and Department Chair of Chemistry, Physics and Engineering Studies at Chicago State University, was honored today, April 23rd, by the Chicago Council on Science and Technology (C2ST) for his research in physics and archaeometry. Each spring, C2ST hosts an annual gala with an awards ceremony to recognize scientists from around Chicago who have made a meaningful impact on the community.

Dr. Garcia-Solis has earned his lifetime achievement award for dedicating his career to the field of high-energy physics and archaeometry and was nominated by board member Alma Navarro, former CSU engineering program student and Dr. Garcia-Solis' research assistant. During the academic years 2016 and 2017, Dr. Garcia-Solis served as Program Director of the Experimental Nuclear Physics Program at the National Science Foundation (NSF). Currently, he manages the Integrative Activities in Physics program at the NSF while on leave from CSU.

Garcia-Solis has worked in nuclear structure physics and intermediate energy heavy ion physics. Grants from the NSF support Garcia-Solis’s research in high-energy nuclear physics and archaeometry. He is a member of the American Physical Society, where he served as chair of The Committee of Minorities in Physics. He is on the board of the National Society of Hispanic Physicists. Garcia-Solis is the SPS advisor at CSU, and he is one of the QuarkNet mentors of the Chicago area.

“My lifelong interest in science has been fueled by a desire for intellectual challenge, passion for research work, and teaching. I am honored to accept the Lifetime Achievement award from the Council on Science and Technology for my work in physics,” said Dr. Edmundo Garcia-Solis, Professor of Physics and Chair of the Department of Chemistry, Physics and Engineering Studies at Chicago State University. “The organization’s recognition speaks to their commitment to diversity and inclusion in the scientific community and their dedication to connecting the public with science.”

The C2ST offered three unique behind-the-scenes experiences at Chicagoland’s top science institutions during the virtual program series. Guests will meet guides and curators from Argonne, the Field Museum, and MSI and will be able to ask questions and further explore the exhibits at the end of the guided tours.

The C2ST mission is to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of science and technology and their impact on society. C2ST has spent the past decade working towards its mission of a community-engaged with science. The council has grown to encompass much of the Chicago area and done its best to create a place where anyone from anywhere can come to learn.
