“The faculty promoted an open environment in which students were able to engage in the learning process. The faculty placed a strong emphasis on counseling skills, ethics, multiculturalism, and developing a strong professional identity in counseling. The class sizes were small, which enabled the faculty to build working professional relationships with the students. Each required course was in alignment with the accreditation standards. This was essential to meet the requirements to take the National Counselor Examination (NCE) in order to obtain certification and licensure in professional counseling. I was eligible to take the NCE during my final semester and passed on the first try.”

Since I earned my degree from the Counseling Graduate Program, I feel that I have developed the skill set to handle mental health issues that arise within community. The instructors encouraged critical thinking and created a supportive learning environment where I was free to take risk and challenge my personal beliefs, values and perspectives. Being CACREP accredited gives me the reassurance that I met the highest training and academic standards recognized by the field.

My journey at Chicago State University was very rewarding. I had the opportunity to earn more than a Master’s Degree in Counseling. The faculty members in the counseling program provided me with mentorship that helped in my personal, academic, and professional development. Many of my professors infused their expertise in counseling with lectures that made learning the subject matter applicable. I felt extremely prepared for my career as a professional counselor in the urban community upon graduating. The course work was challenging and prepared me to further my education. I am currently a doctoral student in Counselor Education and Supervision.
