Natalie Covello, CIA, CGAP
Chief Internal Auditor, Chicago State University
Natalie Covello, CIA, CGAP was named the Chief Internal Auditor for the Chicago State University in September 2019. In her role, Natalie directs and manages the internal audit function for the University. She is responsible for audits of major systems of internal accounting and administrative control, and provides independent, objective assurance and consultation. Internal auditing helps an organization accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to the evaluation and improvement of the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes.
Natalie is continuing her decade+ long service to the State of Illinois. Prior to joining CSU, Natalie led the internal audit team at the Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity as the Chief Internal Auditor and prior to that, Natalie worked at the Illinois Housing and Development Authority under several position titles, including Assistant Director of Internal Audit. Natalie began her audit career at PricewaterhouseCoopers where she was an Associate Auditor within the Private Company Services group.
Natalie is a Certified Internal Auditor, a Certified Government Auditing Professional, and a member of several professional organizations including the Institute of Internal Auditors and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. She attended the University of Illinois at Chicago where she earned her Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in Accounting degrees.
Natalie was appointed by the governor to the Illinois State Internal Audit Advisory Board where she has been serving since 2018. In addition, she was elected to the Board of Governors for the Chicago Chapter of Institute of Internal Auditors in 2019 and also serves as the Chair of the Government Advisory Committee. She was awarded with 2018’s Outstanding Committee Chairperson of the Year. She currently resides in Park Ridge, Illinois, with her husband and four children.
