Honors in IS

Honors Designation in International Studies

The International Studies program also offers an honors designation for qualified majors. A student who completes the designation requirements will be awarded Honors in the International Studies major on the final transcript and diploma. The honors designation qualifications and requirements are as follows:

In order to apply a student must: have a 3.25 GPA or higher in the major (after 18 credit hours in the major); have a 3.0 GPA or higher overall; be a rising junior (second-semester sophomore); identify a faculty member who will serve as a faculty mentor to direct the honors thesis.

Interested students should in timely fashion complete an application for admission that is signed by the faculty mentor and approved by the department chair.

Designation Requirements

Honors students must complete two designated honors classes or independent studies at the 3000-4000 level  (6 credit hours), complete a two-semester honors thesis project with a faculty mentor (6 credit hours – IS 4750, 4850)

Students must earn a B or above in each honors course, while maintaining a major GPA of 3.25 or higher in order to receive departmental honors.  Honors students also must present the honor thesis project in a public forum either at CSU or at a similar setting. 

The plan of study should be approved both by the program honors committee and the department chair.  The student must present/defend her/his thesis during the semester IS 4850 is taken.
