International Studies Program Approved for Chicago State University

Thousands of students from the Chicago area and the region now have an affordable way to pursue international studies thanks to a new degree program in the field at Chicago State University. The Illinois Board of Higher Education has approved the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies, which brings together Chicago State’s many globally oriented programs under one focus.

The new degree program gives students a way to make international studies the core of their college education. Chicago State is now the only public university in Illinois to offer an undergraduate degree in international studies. This opens the door to an affordable global education for thousands of residents of the state.

The new degree program is housed in CSU’s department of History, Philosophy and Political Science. Students can choose a concentration from such areas as international relations, law, history, public health, environmentalism and others.

Department chair Dr. Thomas Bernard Rowan, III, who headed the effort to create the program said there are many students already at Chicago State who are interested in this major, but until now had no central focus with an international or global perspective. “There is a demand for this program, not only from our students, but also from area high schools students who want an affordable, challenging program that will prepare them for international endeavors,” said Rowan.

Chicago State already has several offerings with a global emphasis including nine foreign languages, international marketing, and geography.
