There are numerous tools online for history students, teachers, and scholars to use
in order to conduct original research in primary sources. Below are just a few examples
of some of these tools:
- Introduction to Archival Research is a guide put together by the CSU University Archivist, Aaisha Haykal, and it gives
an overview of archival research, how to locate archives, and links to online tools
for conducting archival research.
- Center for Research Libraries (CRL) is a consortium of research libraries, of which CSU is a member, that collects and
preserves documents from around the world, including a large collection of foreign
newspapers.
- The Newberry Library is an independent research library located in Chicago that has extensive primary
source collections available to students and scholars.
History is a vibrant fields with numerous professional associations. Most history
professional associations focus on a specific field of historical study, and provide
members with opportunities to present and publish research, learn about new directions
in the study of history, and interact with others who have similar interest. Below
are a few of the larger history professional associations:
- The American Historical Association (AHA) is the largest professional association of historians in the United States. The AHA
supports teaching and historical scholarship on all places, peoples, and time periods.
- The Organization of American Historians (OAH) is the largest professional association focused on supporting teaching and scholarship
on American history.
- The World History Association (WHA) is an organization of scholars, teacher, and students focused on studying history
across regional, cultural, and political boundaries.
- The Labor and Working Class History Association (LAWCHA) is an organization of scholars, teachers, students, and activists who focus on the
study of labor and working-class history.
- The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) is an organization of scholars, teachers, and students who focus on the study of Black
life, history, and culture.
