The mission of the Department of Health Information Administration is to prepare confident, competent, and contributing professionals, many of whom are underrepresented in the health care professions, to function in ever-changing health information management and technology systems.  Graduates will be equipped through engaging in life-long learning and will serve as advocates for patient and consumer health privacy and confidentiality.  Our mission is an aligned extension of the University’s mission at Chicago State University. 

Our vision is to be recognized as a leader in health information and informatics education and to empower individuals to serve as leaders in the health information management profession.

The Chicago State University Health Information Administration (HIA) Program is committed to developing critical thinkers and active agents focused on and addressing local, regional, national, and global issues. The Health Information Administration (HIA) Program’s program and curriculum are guided b­­­y the core principles of the American Health Information Management Association’s (AHIMA) Core Curriculum and the standards of the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). The HIA Program and curriculum are guided by these four core principles:

1. Encouraging confidence that the educational activities of the HIA program have been found to meet accreditation standards supported by the profession.
2. Empowering students, graduates and professionals to qualitatively impact healthcare and contribute to the body of knowledge.
3. Serving locally and globally where trusted information transforms health and healthcare by connecting people, systems, and ideas.
4. Striving toward self-transformation of the student from combining life-long learning, community advocacy and sharing of healthcare knowledge with a sense of purpose.

The Health Information Administration (HIA) Program provides undergraduate students with the tools they need to pursue a rigorous course of study while working with other Healthcare students in the College of Health Sciences and College of Pharmacy and other College Information Administration (HIA) Program students who challenge and support each other to develop a deep understanding of the world of healthcare across disciplines and their place in it. Through them, students develop and sharpen their reading, writing, statistical, scientific, analytical, leadership and communication skills. The HIA Education & Training and Research courses are designed to develop students’ research and presentation skills, linking their Health Information Administration (HIA) Program competencies with their specific domains, tasks and service within the scope of the profession. There are five domains areas which synthetizes a unique skill set of this baccalaureate degree program:

1. Domain I: Information Governance
2. Domain II: Compliance and Uses of Protected Health Information
3. Domain III: Data Informatics and Analytics
4. Domain IV: Revenue Management
5. Domain V: Management and Leadership
