International Applicants

Freshman Admisisons

Individuals who are a citizen or permanent resident of a country outside the United States. Chicago State University is authorized under federal law to issue documents for individuals to study at the university on an F-1 or J-1 visa. To be considered for admission to CSU, applicants are required to submit qualifying documentation towards their application. To complete an application and before an I-20 (for individuals on F-1 visas) or DS-2019 (for individuals on J-1 visas) can be issued, international applicants must complete the steps listed below by category.

Applicants who are currently in high school or have earned the equivalent to a US high school diploma and never attended college are required to submit the following documents to complete the application to be considered for admissions:

  • Complete application online
    • CommonApp
    • CSU application
  • Submit English language proficiency – individuals that have not completed education from the countries listed on page 31 of the Academic Catalog must submit a valid score from one of the following companies, taken within the last 2 years for their application:
  • Complete a foreign credential evaluation- evaluation must be completed with a NACES approved foreign credential evaluation company, showing equivalency to high school diploma and cumulative overall GPA of 2.5. Individuals commonly select from one of the following below:
  • High school transcripts or official academic credentials (all documents in languages other than English must be accompanied by a certified translation from a NACSE approved credit evaluation company. All documents from institutions outside of the United States must be accompanied by an evaluation from a NACES approved organization)
  • Letter of Recommendation
  • ACT or SAT score (optional to submit through Spring 2022)
  • $30 application fee

International Transfer Applicants

Defined as individuals who have earned an associate degree or have earned at least 24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours of earned college level coursework from a regionally accredited institution. Applicants must earn a cumulative GPA (Grade Point Average) of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale to be considered for admissions and submit the following for their application:

  • Complete application online
    • CSU application
  • Official College Transcripts (All documents in languages other than English must be accompanied by a certified translation from a NACES approved credential evaluation company. All documents from institutions outside of the United States must be accompanied by an evaluation from a NACES approved organization)-
    • Have institution send electronic transcripts to admissions@csu.edu OR if electronic transcripts are not an option,
    • Paper transcripts can be mailed to: Chicago State University, Office of Undergraduate Admissions, 9501 South King Drive, ADM 101, Chicago, IL 60628.
  • Foreign Credential Evaluation- only required if you are transferring from a regionally accredited college or university from outside of the United States. Evaluation must be completed with a NACES approved foreign credential evaluation company, showing courses taken, grades earned, credits earned for each course, and cumulative overall GPA of 2.0. Individuals commonly select from one of the following below:
  • Submit English language proficiency – individuals that have not completed education from the countries listed on page 31 of the Academic Catalog must submit a valid score from one of the following companies, taken within the last 2 years for their application:

Transfer applicants that do not meet the minimum of 24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours of earned college-level coursework from a regionally accredited institution will be considered as a transfer freshman applicant and will be required to submit documents as required for Freshman applicants.

Applicants that provide evidence of one of the following below will not be required to submit proof of language proficiency:

  • Completed secondary education in a country where English is recognized as a primary language or as medium of instruction, as recognized in the Academic Catalog, on page 31, OR
  • Completed a minimum of 24 semester credit hours or 36 quarter hours of earned credit from an accredited U.S. college or university.

In order to ensure there is sufficient time to process the application and visa processes, it is advised that the application must be completed, and all required documents submitted by the application deadlines listed below:
